Dior - Grace and Gardening
Last season,
Dior absolutely smashed it for me. The check print that ran throughout the show was a look I wanted for my wardrobe and to some extent I already had it in my wardrobe because who does not own a check flannel shirt anyway? However, I loved everything about last season and seeing some Dior pieces this Spring only cemented that feeling.
In March, I went to the
Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition and I can now say the clothes are definitely as glorious in real life as they look in all of the pictures. Seeing so many Dior pieces in one place made my love for the brand grow. I couldn't wait to see what Maria had in store for us this season and it did not disappoint.
Spring/Summer 2020
This season's Dior may have lost the print I love most, the check pattern, but the style is fundamentally the same. The styling and the shape of the pieces is still gorgeous this season.
Instead of the Autumnal check, this pattern has been traded for a lighter, more traditional check, florals and houndstooth patterning. However, a lot of the looks have been paired with large combat boots that seem more appropriate for A/W but I have no complaints as I love combat boots. The Prada ones for A/W19 that everyone seems to be wearing at the moment are my dream boots.
The combat boots really are the only element of the runway that give the looks an element of edge. Instead, for the most part, the collection is gardening inspired. From when I went to the Dior exhibition, I know he grew up in the most gorgeous house with lots of land but I didn't think he was much of a gardener. Anyway Maria has used the idea of gardening to help with the concept of sustainability within Fashion which much like when
Vivienne Westwood tried to tackle this issue, seems like two very opposite concepts.
Some outfits had been paired with gardening gloves and a straw hat had replaced the traditional bucket hat from last season. Not only have the hats been replaced with straw but the belt this season has been replaced with thin strands of leather opposed to the Cummerbund style belts from last season, creating a straw like look to the belt. There are a lot of oversized blazers which are traditionally belted to create shape which Mr Dior was big on back in the day.
Some of my favourite looks are the outfits that incorporate a blazer, a belt and a long tulle skirt that Dior have now become known for and which a lot of brands have tried to recreate. The outfit in look 51 basically features everything I have been talking about so far.
There were of course some more experimental pieces like the gorgeous, almost tie-dye jumpsuit of look 61, less of what you expect from Dior. I felt the start of this runway was slightly more experimental and as it progressed you could see more of what you would consider to be traditional Dior styling. As always there was some large branding and more simply the detailing. I always love the Dior runway and this one did not disappoint.
Based on This Show, What Should You Add to Your S/S Wardrobe?
Belted Blazers. Tailoring has been big on the runway again this season but Blazers don't really give you a chance to show off your waist when they are open but with a belt the entire look is changed. I love how Dior used this look throughout the entire runway.
Tulle Skirts, every season I see the tulle skirts on the Dior runway and I want one. So many brands have adopted the tulle skirt but Dior really started all of this. I think I might struggle to find one on the high street which is good quality but I will give it a go.
No Check This Season. I've got to say I am disappointed to see no check this season. The check print was my favourite part of last season. I can understand why there is no check because it is primarily an Autumn print but I really loved it.
Feminine Shaping has Always Been, and Will Always Be Relevant. When Mr Dior created his first runway, he wanted to empower women and wanted to show off their femininity. The shape of Dior clothes have always allowed for this and this season is the perfect example of this.
